Promoting Affiliate Programs


Affiliate marketing happens when a person signs up with a merchant to sell the merchant's products in exchange for a portion of the sale price. This sale is called a commission.

Merchants may also offer pay per click, where the affiliate is paid for each click through, or pay per lead, where the affiliate refers someone to the merchant's site to complete a specific action, like completing an application.

For those who don't want to create or sell their own products, marketing affiliate programs is an easy way to get started in business quickly.

With millions of products available on the Internet to sell, there are a few things you want to consider first before starting your affiliate business.

1. Choose your topic?

I believe in choosing topics you are interested in because you will have to do some writing like product reviews and promotional materials. It's easier to write about something you are interested in. Just make sure there is a market for the products you want to sell.

2. What types of products do you want to sell?

There are both digital and physical products available for sale on the Internet.

The advantage of digital products is that they offer higher commissions than physical products. The problem here is that there may not be any digital products related to the topic you choose.

3. Will you build a website? If so, what type of website will you build?

There are lots of ways to build websites from creating a simple one page website for list building or offering a product review, to creating a blog or affiliate store using some type of script.

If you do decide to build a website, you'll also need a domain name and web hosting. Do your research and get the most powerful web hosting possible for the price.

4. How will you promote?

It is easier to promote your affiliate business if you build a website and then drive quality traffic to your website using search engines and PPC

Google Adwords is a "pay-per-click" marketing service. Pay-per-click means you only pay when someone clicks on your ad.

Google Adwords is the fastest way to get traffic. PERIOD. However, it can also be the most intimidating. It's important to have a good understanding of how pay-per-click marketing works, BEFORE you dive in. You want to make sure you are spending your marketing dollars intelligently, and not just "slinging mud against the wall."

You can make millions of dollars while you sleep. People are always searching online and if you are in front of them, they will click. If you get good at Adwords, it is extremely powerful.

Be patient with yourself as Google Adwords is a continual learning process, but a marketing method that can be VERY profitable once you have it nailed down.

Here is a short version on the basics how Google Adwords works:

I. How Google Adwords Works
1.You "bid" on a keyword (i.e. "home based business")
2.When an internet user goes to Google.com and types in "home based business" your ad shows on the right side of the page.
3.If the internet user clicks on your ad, you pay your bid for that keyword

II. Important Basic Terminology

CTR — Click Through Rate — This number is a percentage of how many people actually click on your ad compared to how many time your ad was shown. For example, if your ad shows 100 times, and out of those 100 times, 2 people actually click on your ad, you would have a CTR rate of 2%.

CPC — Cost Per Click — This is how much you are paying every time someone clicks on your ad. Your goal should be to have your CPC at $0.80 or less for each keyword. Conversion Rate – This is the percentage of people that go to your website AND fill out the opt-in form on your page.

Impressions — This is how many times your ad was shown in search results.

Avg. Pos — Average Position — This is your average position in the Google search results. Your goal is to remain between positions 4 to 7. Any higher, and you are wasting money on “click happy” people who aren’t serious. Any lower, and you may not be receiving enough views or your ad.

Ad Group — An Ad or group of ads with relevant keywords in it.

Keyword — This is what people type into the Google search bar when they do a search on Google. For example, “business” could be a keyword. “Start a business” can also be referred to as a keyword (even though it’s more than 1 word). Keywords with more than one keyword can also be referred to as "Keyword Phrases", but are most commonly referred to as "keywords."
